The Flanders Fire Department next week will get two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center that will be used as centerpieces in a Sept. 11 memorial that’s planned for Flanders Memorial Park.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has allowed hundreds of pieces of steel from the World Trade Center to be used for memorials by fire departments across the county.
Fire commissioners’ chairman Brian Williams said the department plans to go to JFK airport Tuesday morning to pick up the beams.
“An email went out to agencies like ours earlier this year asking if we wanted a piece of steel,” Mr. Williams said. “We responded back in February that we did and got word we were granted a piece pretty soon after that. From there, it was just paperwork.”
He said the department plans to incorporate the steel into a new memorial near the existing firemen’s memorial at the park off Flanders Road. “We’ll have a ceremony on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and then it will become part of our annual services,” he said.
Fire departments in Quogue, Rocky Point and Sound Beach have also been granted steel from the Twin Towers.
